District School Safety Assessments

Assessing districts' alignment with the school safety continuum

Superintendents play a vital role in ensuring the safety of their schools. They realize that school safety isn’t just about one person, program, or piece of technology—it's a rich tapestry of interconnected initiatives and skills that work together harmoniously.

As we assess school safety, we take a close look at the measures, practices, and systems currently in place across your district and identify opportunities for improvement. Our research has led us to create an accessible and easy-to-understand framework that covers a wide range of district practices, both before and after any incidents occur. This framework serves as a helpful starting point for superintendents, clearly showcasing the scope of the district’s capabilities.

At Thru, we passionately believe that the journey toward school safety begins long before an incident happens, rooted in connection and relationships. It's essential for schools to foster meaningful connections between students and caring adults, provide necessary supports, prepare the school environment for physical safety, and, ideally, be ready to recover from any incidents. These stages can help outline the district’s practices and planning activities, serving as a framework to assess progress over time.

Our Approach

We have developed an approach to the district school safety assessments made up of three phases, culminating in delivery of a district-wide assessment report to the district's leadership; even to community leaders, as applicable.

The first phase will kick off the project and begin to identify and gather applicable data and information around the school safety framework buckets, (i.e., Care, Support, Deter, etc.).

In the next phase, we will analyze the data gathered in detail, begin to formulate findings in a draft report, and conduct a workshop to discuss the findings. The final phase includes seeking specific feedback on the draft report, updating the report accordingly, and presenting to designated audience(s).
